Throughout the s, Rodney Alcala murdered at least seven women across California and New York, becoming one of the most notorious serial killers of the 20th Century. But while most killers operate in the shadows, Alcala preferred the spotlight. He became an unlikely winner on ABC’s long-running game show The Dating Game, where he successfully charmed a young lady on television, in front of millions of viewers, while in the middle of a prolific killing spree. He was born in Texas and moved to Mexico when he was eight. His father abandoned the family three years later, and Alcala wound up in L. He dropped out of school at 17 and joined the army, but quickly suffered a nervous breakdown and was discharged; the military diagnosed him with anti-social personality disorder. This would be the first in a laundry list of diagnoses levelled at Alcala over the years: borderline personality disorder; sexual sadism comorbidity; psychopathy; narcissistic personality disorder.

In , he was charged in Wyoming for the cold case murder of Christine Ruth Thornton. The local prosecutor decided not to extradite him , instead letting the year-old remain in prison in California.

Starting in , the reality show featured a woman asking three men questions without seeing their faces, then choosing one to go on a date with in some episodes, it was a man questioning three women. Of course, plenty of these couples did not end up clicking romantically. But in at least one instance, a Dating Game contestant ended up picking a serial killer. The September 13, episode of The Dating Game was much like the other episodes. Like usual, there was a lot of unsubtle and uncomfortable innuendo.
At the end of the game, Bradshaw picked Bachelor Number One, who turned out to be a long-haired man in his mids named Rodney Alcala.

He behaved well, read avidly and was an attentive pupil in various classes. Less than two years into his sentence, he convinced a psychiatrist he was rehabilitated and was released.
He would soon reoffend — landing back in jail two months later after assaulting a year-old girl. One symptom is the inability to feel guilt and empathy. He used his personality to attract victims.
